(On the occasion of reprinting, the book Truth Sutra, Year of the Treasure Rooster 1993 - Buddhist calendar 2537)
Dear Venerable Zens, monks, nuns, and Buddhists.
The Truth Sutra is a set of doctrinal books, recording the sermons taught and propagated during ten years (1945-1954) by Patriarch Minh Dang Quang. He practiced Buddhism throughout the provinces and cities of two regions: East and West, in the Southern region of Vietnam. On date: February 1, lunar calendar, Year of the Horse (1954): The Patriarch has passed away and is absent. Since then, the TRUTH SUTRA series has been the embodiment, the mark...! It is a noble Dharma treasure that the Patriarch left behind for his disciples of the four groups, disciples of the sect: Buddhist Mendicants of Vietnam.
During the decade: 1950-1960, these sermons were printed in small volumes according to each topic. To make it easier to implement and widely disseminate, for people from all over the world to see it to cultivate themselves and learn the Dharma. Such as the books: Eightfold Path, Meditation and Enter Samadhi, Vegetarianism, Enlightenment, Fear of Sin, Repentance, Lessons for Lay People...etc.
In 1961, for the first time, the Venerable Monks: Zen Virtues, Dharma Masters, and Great Disciples of the Patriarch gathered together. And the whole thing was printed as publication service with the title of the book series as TRUTH. Its meaning is a service book: "don't buy and sell scriptures" Buddha's teachings!
___ But now, the revision is the TRUTH SUTRA, by this lay student Tam-Dang, who has vowed to "translate into English". After receiving the Dharma and practicing the "special transmission of foreign teachings", recite the sutras in English. And have participated in the "Bodhisattva Conduct" retreat (teaching the Dharma) taught by the third Patriarch THICH GIAC TINH. With the practice of pure karma (tantra, pure land, and exoteric), it is called "directly pointing to the true transmission". Practicing "non-questioning self-talk" is speaking out, in order to bring yourself "harmonious speech-outdoor karma"!
The complete set of the Truth Sutra includes a total of 69 topics. Each topic the Patriarch discussed presented an issue, an idea of Buddha's dharma: connection...The basic point, no matter what topic is mentioned, the Patriarch does not separate the meaning, which is to enlighten and guide students to practice. In accordance with the Dharma, as in the three canonical teachings: the Sutras, the Vinaya, and the Abhidharma teachings of the Buddha. This shows us that without the true heart, wisdom, and will, the wish of a Patriarch with the mission "to found a sect", it is certainly difficult to do.
A more outstanding feature is that in the decade: 1940 - 1950, Vietnamese Buddhism was in a period of gradually transforming Buddhism in the country. The Patriarch has adapted, applied, and harmoniously combined: two long-standing traditions of world and local Buddhism. From there, an ideology was formed, establishing the nation's uniqueness with the aspiration: "Transmitting Shakyamuni Dharma" - "Vietnamese Mendicant Buddhism". Aiming to build a unique Buddhist sect, expressing its style, imprint, and profound national influence, and unique to Vietnam.
Regarding the form of architecture and worship, the Patriarch advocated the construction of the Three Jewels: Vihara, with an octagonal model. Inside the solemn, decorated main hall worships a single "Precious Statue" of Buddha Shakyamuni is worshipped on a stupa: three levels. And in daily activities: Monks, nuns, and followers of the sect recite, read, and study the Sutra Pitaka, the Vinaya Pitaka, and the Abhidharma Pitaka in Vietnamese.
___ The content of this Truth Sutra shows us even though the objective conditions are very limited. Especially the Sutras, Laws, and Commentaries at that time were mostly in original Sanskrit (Pali) or Sino-Vietnamese characters. Furthermore, the Patriarch's time of exploration, research, and practice was not long, yet the Patriarch also formed and systematized a number of relatively basic categories. Aims to introduce the fundamental parts of Buddhist thought and teachings to all levels of the public with the full nature of experimental science, and the reality of science and nature: harmony!
___ At the beginning of the Truth Sutra, we immediately encounter topics: presenting general concepts about human origin. The logical philosophy of man and nature relates to Buddhist teachings such as Cosmological View, Five Aggregates, Six-Roots, Twelve Causes and Conditions, Existence and Emptiness, Birth and Death, Male and Female, etc.
a.- Lectures on human thought, action, and cause and effect, including books such as Justice of the Universe, En, Enlightenment, Encouragement to Practice, Let's Become a Monk, Cultivation and Karma, Eating and Living, Seed, Fear of Sin, Lion, Repentance, etc.
____ Lectures on the moral life, or perspectives on building a peaceful and happy society as The Land of Paradise*, the Land of Ultimate Bliss, on Earth.
And there are books: School of Ethics, Source of Ethics, Life of Ethics, The Land of Paradise, etc...
___ Introducing the method of practice, to reach "realization: reality" and achieve fruition in the following volumes:
The Eightfold Path; Perfect Enlightenment (Complete Enlightenment)Mendicant's robe and bowl: True transmission. Meditation and enter samadhi.; Spirit of Secrets; Observe the Breath; Buddhas;  Righteous Dharma; Dharma of Right Enlightenment.
b.- The relationship between sects and Mahayana thought, the development includes the books: Three Teachings; Religion; Mahayana Buddhism; Buddhism; Dharma Treasury (Hidden Dharma Treasure)
And books like: Immeasurable nectar; Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva; Great Consciousness; Stratum Bodhisattva; The Lotus Sutra, etc…
c.- Especially about the precepts, and the basic dharma studies for: Monks and nuns, monastic mendicants to study.
Mendicant Lessons; The Law of Mendicants; Lessons for "Sa-di" (probationary); Dharma Learning for Novice Monks I (Verse on Precepts)Dharma Study for novices II (Destroying Desire); Dharma Study for novices III (The Dharma Subtle) Buddhist Precepts (Bodhisattva Precepts); The Precepts' Monks;  The Precepts' Nuns
The Truth Sutra series allows us to reprint this period (1993 - Buddhist calendar 2537), and we have made a request. Having been approved by the venerable monks and monks of the Mendicant sect, they happily and unanimously divided the set of Truth Sutra into two parts:
A.- The catechism section includes 60 lecture topics, and they're the patriarch MINH ĐANG QUANG's sermon, listed in the order of the table of contents from 1 to 60. In this section, monks, nuns, and Buddhists all read, study, practice, and learn. If you do not practice reading the "sermon," then "misguided intentions" and when a statement arises, unforeseen mistakes will be made.
B.- The basic Precepts and Dharma studies of monks and nuns, including 9 volumes (as mentioned above) plus the volume: 114 small Precepts of the Patriarch. Will be named Truth Sutra, Precepts and Rituals of Mendicants (For monastics only). This section is only for monks and nuns to leave home and study.; Dear Zen Venerables: Monks, Nuns, and good men and women Buddhist followers!
For a long time, we have studied and obeyed the Buddha's words, "Let's inherit the Dharma, rather than inherit the property". For a child of Buddha, the Dharma treasure is a source of wealth more precious than any other property in the world. In the Mahaparinirvana Sutra, the Holy Conduct chapter, the Buddha also taught: Why is it called a saint? Called saints because these people often practice "holy conduct" and have six properties of saints: faith, discipline, long-suffering (to know shame), poly literacy, wisdom, and renunciation.
The ancients said: "To practice without learning is to cultivate blindly, to study without practice is to store books". These are true words, worthy of our contemplation.
The Patriarch MINH DANG QUANG often warned: "The spirit is not tight, the material is not wasted. It's fact is yes, its reason is no”. Therefore, the Buddha's practitioners were ordained and lay people at home. We always study diligently with our hearts and minds, earnestly seeking...so that the precepts, our lives, our wisdom, are always growing in the Dharma. And let's be diligent, with the spirit of attentiveness, calmness, and not stubbornness like the Patriarch, who often encouraged and taught:
"___ Should learn to live together and practice:
The thing to live is to live together.
Knowing must be learned together.
The spirit is to practice together.

I hope that the Truth Sutra, the teachings of Patriarch Minh Dang Quang, will help practitioners on their path: learning to practice. Depending on good conditions, it will more or less contribute to illuminating the path leading to the Right Dharma. Will bring about the status of Supreme Being of Perfect Enlightenment, of every child of Buddha, good fate,...how good!
Every step is a lotus flower.
Immersed in the Dharma rain, the flower lights shine brightly.
Awakening, the Truth shines brightly.
Every step is a lotus flower.
Homage to the merit of coming with Bodhisattva Mahasattva.
Sincere and respectful!

Quote:
[293-294] The truth of the universal universe belongs to all sentient beings. In the Truth Sutra, there is no superstition in:
a. material-only (in the sense of "only matter")
b. consciousness-only
c. or idealistic
There is no superstition in people, in doctrines, in miracles, in things, anything...; and don't throw away: anything, at all! True to the Truth is nature, nature lives forever. That natural Truth is our school, so!

Definition - What does Dhyana mean?

Dhyana is a Sanskrit word meaning "meditation." It is derived from the root words, dhi, meaning “receptacle” or “the mind,”; and yana, meaning “moving” or “going.” An alternate root word, dhyai, means "to think of."

In Hindu traditions that are derived from Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, dhyana is a refined meditative practice that requires deep mental concentration. This kind of meditation is taken up only after engaging in preparatory exercises.
